Craig note– It is time for the third annual Grey, Grizzled, and Gaijin Social Media Awards. We take a moment to highlight some of the very best content creators we saw this year on Twitter. We could have picked from any number of amazing people.
That is a credit to the work many of you do to “be more” in your lives, virtual and real, too. And the world and I are better for engaging you this year. (An especially tough one on a personal level…ouch.)

2020 GGG FILM OF THE YEAR- STAY
A new category this year! We are happy to say cinema is not dead. “Stay” is a wonderful film that was a pleasure to review earlier this year (read the review).
A bittersweet love story about redemption, STAY, is the second feature film by Darryl Wharton-Rigby. STAY has been screened at the Urbanworld Film Festival, Worldfest Houston, and Japanfest Hamburg festivals.
2020 GGG KANSAI AWARD FOR MEDIA- Where Next Japan
Another new award this year! Where Next Japan put out a fantastic independent film featuring Kyoto. It was a pleasure to review Impossible To Imagine Japanese Title: 想像が出来ない (Souzou ga Dekinai).
Impossible to Imagine is the story of a traditional, Kyoto woman who runs a failing, kimono business and the biracial entrepreneur who comes to help keep it solvent. Along the way they fall in love but his need for change clashes with her desire for the world to stay the same. In the end, can they change enough for the other?
2020 GGG MUSIC CONTENT AWARD- Phillip Jackson
One final new category this year! We highlight talented writer and musician Phillip Jackson. He featured a good many videos showcasing his enormous ability on guitar and in the studio (albeit mostly from home this year). Great stuff and a must subscribe for fans of music! He also writes great content on walking tours in Kyoto.
2020 GGG CONTENT CREATOR OF THE YEAR- Hamish Downie
A relatively recent find on Twitter, but Hamish Downie has burst on the scene with his writing, producing, and quality films including a collaboration with the above mentioned Where Next Japan Impossible To Imagine Japanese Title: 想像が出来ない (Souzou ga Dekinai)
2020 GGG TWITTER USER OF THE YEAR- Kevin O’Shea
Kevin O’Shea provided a unique perspective in 2020 of how difficult life was for many people. The content on his struggles in dealing with the virus in both China and Japan was an amazing journey to follow. It was a cautionary tale about how quickly life can change. His upbeat attitude and commentary was most welcomed in a very, very, very tough year.
2020 GGG WRITER OF THE YEAR- Oscar Jackson
I cannot say enough how hard it was to pick only one person for this award. But, I enjoyed Oscar Jackson’s Science-fiction debut novel, Impermanence. A worthy effort from this young writer, and I expect big things in the future from him.
Set in the near future, Earth 2050, a mysterious chain of events arouses the suspicions of renowned scientist Professor Andy Moroon. The Professor is determined that this is caused by something not of this Earth, while many others, including his friend and colleague James Coleman, believe that this is just another one of his outlandish theories.
Time is running out but Professor Moroon is not one to let an approaching apocalypse stifle him, and so, he and his companion must come up with a strategy to save themselves and the Earth, and avoid imminent annihilation!
2020 GGG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR- Danny Lee Baker
The Twitter-verse is full of great photographers. But, we enjoyed the first class work of Danny Lee Baker. His interesting use of lighting, scenery, and drones is amazing! It is not to be missed by fans of nature! A repeat winner of this award for his continued excellence in the field of photography.
2020 GGG SOCIAL MEDIA BREAK OUT STAR OF THE YEAR- Conbini Boys
We enjoyed several new faces this year on Twitter. But, Conbini Boys provides super regular content on the wonderful world that is Japanese convivence store food! If you are a foodie like us, they are a must follow!
2020 GGG SOCIAL MEDIA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD- The Real Japan
Some people have done so, so, so much on Social Media they could win every category. That would not allow my blog to showcase some special people. But, such folks deserve recognition.
We choose The Real Japan. Their consistent content about all things Japan is part of my daily reading and watching online. They also work hard to promote a positive image of Japan and tourism. A repeat winner in this category. The Real Japan despite the current state of the world still put out great content! Check out his new eBook “Planning A Trip To Japan.”
2020 GGG ENGAGER OF THE YEAR- Bill Adler
Many people support Grey, Grizzled, and Gaijin, but this year Bill Adler took extra time from his busy day to read and edit our new books. He also provided encouragement, and support throughout the year. That was appreciated! Bill can be found actively writing on Medium.
